World Tapa Day 2019 in Vietnam
June 16, 2019
More than 20 restaurants in Hanoi, Da Nang, Hoi An and Ho Chi Minh City will serve Spanish tapas and promote Spanish gastronomy in Vietnam on June 20-23 on the occasion of World Tapas Day.
Introducing “tapas” to the world
“Tapas” are small portions of food that are served together with a drink. In Spain often you can order a drink and the bar will treat you to a small “tapa”.
Legend of this dish is originated in the 13th Century, when King Alfonso X started this tradition. He decreed that all wine served should come with a small bite to eat, to avoid unruly drunkenness. Taverns started serving their wine glasses covered with a slice of bread with ham or cheese on top as a lid or “tapa”, which also helped keep insects away. That is how tapas were born.
Today the tradition remains. Going out for tapas, visiting several bars and restaurants, is one of the favourite pastimes of Spaniards and international tourists visiting Spain.
Celebrations in Vietnam
This year marks the first World Tapas Day held in Vietnam, with the support of the Embassy of Spain in Hanoi and the Economic and Commercial Office of Spain in Ho Chi Minh City, and the participation of 24 restaurants in Hanoi, Da Nang, Hoi An and Ho Chi Minh City.
